Description
Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a Pessac-Léognan red from the historic Martillac estate, managed by the Cathiard family since 1990. The vineyard lies on well-drained Günz gravel, one of the defining features of the Graves terroir. The blend combines 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
Fermentation takes place at 28 °C in small wooden vats, with extraction carried out by manual punch-downs. The wine then ages for 18 months in barrels, 60% of them new and produced in the château’s own cooperage, with ageing on the lees. The nose shows raspberry, cherry and strawberry followed by spice, dried herbs and floral nuances. The palate is concentrated and generous, with polished tannins, excellent freshness and a very long finish of liquorice, cinnamon, smoke and flint.
